Why FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) is
Changing The Construction Industry

WHY ARE MORE ASSET OWNERS CHOOSING FRP

Strong, Durable & Readily Available

More Asset Owners than ever before are choosing Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) over traditional construction materials because it is as strong as steel, with a long service-life in highly corrosive environments and is readily available, unlike hardwood timber.

Wagners FRP structural profiles can be used in a variety of infrastructure projects including pedestrian boardwalks and bridges, beach access stairs, small boat pontoon floats to large jetty repairs and electrical infrastructure like street light columns, utility poles and crossarms, and property poles.

The advantages of using FRP are clear:

A Scenic 20km Pathway Connecting Timboon to Port Campbell

The Twelve Apostles Trail is a 20-kilometer scenic walking and cycling path in Victoria, Australia, connecting Timboon to Port Campbell. The trail features 1.5 kilometers of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) pedestrian bridges and boardwalks, including a notable 117-meter cantilevered boardwalk overlooking Port Campbell. The route mainly follows a former railway line, passing through farmland and coastal areas, offering stunning views of the iconic Twelve Apostles rock formations along the Great Ocean Road.

Civilnow served as the principal contractor for the project. Despite their initial inexperience with FRP materials, they collaborated with experienced partners to upskill their team and successfully complete the construction. The project commenced in February 2021 and concluded just before Christmas in 2023.

FRP was chosen for its durability, resistance to rot, rust, and corrosion, and its lightweight nature, which facilitated safer handling and installation. These characteristics contributed to the project's efficiency and the longevity of the trail's infrastructure.

Overcoming Environmental Challenges with Cutting-Edge Materials

The Huskisson Mangrove Boardwalk is located in the Jervis Bay Marine Park in New South Wales and was originally constructed in 1991; and at the time was 300-metres long and constructed from treated soft and hard woods. In 2023, ALI Civil were engaged to replace the boardwalk as it had reached the end of its serviceable life.

Designed by MI Engineers, the new boardwalk was constructed from Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT) Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP), which was manufactured in Wellcamp near Toowoomba by Wagners CFT. Since 2017 the asset owner, Shoalhaven City Council had been experiencing ongoing and constantly rising maintenance costs to keep the boardwalk open.

There were significant site constraints for the project including:

  • The project was within the boundary of the Jervis Bay Marine Park
  • The project site was also located within the Sanctuary Zone of the Marine Park
  • The site was significant habitat of the threatened black estuary cod
  • The site was significant habitat of the endangered curlew
  • There was a mature and dense mangrove forest
  • Acid Sulfate soil was identified
  • Poor ground conditions
